Road to Rocktober (Part One)
I know, I know, it’s only July, but our Rocktober calendar is starting to fill up! It’s crazy how busy September/October will get in Minneapolis. Rocktober is so big that we have to start spotlighting bands from now to October.

Tune-Yards
with Kassa Overall
at Fine Line
first-avenue.com
Kicking off Rocktober properly is Oakland’s Tune-Yards headlining the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, on October 1, 2025. We haven’t heard from Tune-Yards in quite a while, but it looks like the duo (Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner) have a new album called Better Dreaming (available now).

tUnE-yArDs at First Ave (Mar 2, 2018)
|
We saw tUnE-yArDs in Mar 2018 and wrote, “The stage was set with dramatic lighting framing the back end of the stage and a curved center frame with gauzed curtains that would accentuate the shadows of tUnE-yArDs as the three-piece took to the stage for their seventy-seven minute headlining set beginning with ‘Home’. “I always feel on holy ground” Garbus posted on social media just prior to playing the historic venue. The new album, more electronic than previous, but still dealing with issues including self-identity and appropriation amongst very danceable beats, was the clear focus of the evening, with the group playing just over half of the new tracks, but still saving room for some old favorites as well.”
Kassa Overall to open.

Royel Otis at First Ave (Sep 15, 2024)
|
We caught the band in Sep 2024, and wrote, “Still hot on the music scene, Royel Otis is now playing the much bigger First Avenue. With the bigger stage, they were able to fit more backdrop… including a humongous shrimp in the background. The shrimp, or prawn, as the Australian calls them, is taken from their “Oysters in My Pocket” music video. Currently, the shrimp doesn’t have a name, but the internet all seemed to agree to call it “Shawn the Prawn.””
