The Labor Day weekend gone, the Minnesota State Fair over, and the kids all back in school, autumn has arrived in the Twin Cities (even if it isn’t official for a few weeks). Over in Minneapolis, Portland’s Glitterfox was kicking off a headlining tour with a show at the 7th St. Entry.
Jillian Rae kicked off the evening. We just saw her opening for The Holy North over at Turf Club at the end of July. Coming out as a pair for “a chill duo set” rather than their standard quartet, it was Rae and Eric Martin both on guitars and vocals, starting with the song White Walls. It was a slightly different sound, but it played well with Rae’s vocals taking more central stage. The lyric “I can’t be the one you want me to be” packed a hefty punch and was a pretty good distillation of what Rae’s music was going for. Free was a song about angst, and Rae let us know that the feelings she had when she wrote in 2016 still resonate for her today. The guitar work, quiet then loud and a little syncopated, gave an uneven feel and let Rae’s vocals shine. A newer song, You Do You, “will be on one of the two new albums we’re working on” and had a more nasally vocal sound from Rae riding on top of Martin’s rock chords. An unplanned song, Heart in a Jar, was “a zombie love song”, with reverb heavy effects as Rae switched to violin. A slowed down cover of Prince’s When Doves Cry was nearing the end of the set. The final song, Heartbeat, let Rae and Martin go full out and was a delightful end.

Glitterfox came to the stage next. The Portland-based band released their EP Night in 2022 and their debut full length album decoder in late August 2025. They came on as a quartet (vocals, guitar, bass/backing vocals, and drums/backing vocals) and it was all systems go from the start. A messed up intro to the second song, Wildfires, had them start over and laughing hysterically when it had a different mistake on the retry, but they powered through. I love bands that can roll with the punches and have fun with each other, and that was obvious in the early going with Glitterfox. The band’s current work is very indie rock, but some of their early work was more Americana, and I loved the mix, with i (off their Highway Forever collection) recalling that sound. Singer Solange Igoa’s vocals were a standout, but this band was also fully going. Bassist Eric Stalker was charismatic in support and on backing vocals, while guitarist Andrea Walker was deadpan funny and crushing it on guitar. Drummer Blaine Heinonen kept the band moving, even as he laughed “I feel like it’s my first day back here”.
Side note: Holy crap, singer Solange Igoa has the most amazing tattoo sleeve that I have maybe ever seen on her left arm.
A live debut of Gamma Ray off the new album decoder was pretty outstanding. Walker started lead vocals on the next song and the combo with Igoa was a very Fleetwood Mac sound and Walker’s guitar solo was the cherry on top. Portland had Heinonen on backing vocals, providing a different harmony for Igoa with a more Western feel. A great bass intro to the older Kentucky Night was a great number, letting Walker unleash on guitar. Glitterfox had a joy that was infectious, and for the audience it was a great mix of laughing and being impressed by their musical work. Richie’s Party was another brand new live performance and had the whole band getting their part and seemed to be a great introduction to the band. A final song, a Pat Benatar cover of Heartbreaker, was a perfect end to Glitterfox’s phenomenal start of the tour.
