I’m Happy to Be Here Tonight

Back in the days when we had a lot of dedicated record stores in Minneapolis, there was a music store called Let It Be Records, on Nicollet. It was just a casual walk over from First Avenue, in downtown Minneapolis.

Scottish band Idlewild was then promoting their sophomore album, 100 Broken Windows. The album was recorded in 1999, with a proper release in 2000. They worked with several producers and engineer, including Bob Weston, from Chicago, and producer Dave Eringa, who produced their two hit songs “Little Discourage” and “Roseability”.

At this time (May 2001), Idlewild was touring as support for Placebo, making their way across America. Prior to this major international tour, the band had built up a reputation for having a chaotic live show. In 1998, they had just gotten off their first UK tour, playing with Midget. So, being in America, playing with Placebo, that was a big deal for this small indie band.

Before the Placebo show at First Avenue, Idlewild did a brief record-signing and acoustic set at Let It Be Records. I took a few photos and met the band, and then headed over to First Ave to see them take the main room’s stage.

For the longest time, the band was on “indefinite hitatus”… but somehow reemerged in 2013 to announced their seventh album Everything Ever Written (released in 2015). Currently, as of last month (!), the band released their tenth studio self-titled Idlewild on October 3, 2025. This was the band’s highest charting album in over 20 years!
