As an e-Ink enthusiast for reading comic books (I own a BOOX Air 3C, Kindle Scribe, and the Remarkable Paper Pro) and I love the alternative technology to the tried-and-true LCD screen of the iPad or any modern tablet. With these e-Ink devices, I can read or write without straining my eyes (because the devices are not using any light).
Since I’ve long given up on Spectra 6 and the Kindle Colorsoft Scribe due to their astronomical prices (minimum buy-in price is over $600 for 11 inches!), there is the super interesting magnet ink capsule product called KaitePAD, made by Plus. Unfortunately, the Kaite are not available to purchase in America, but looking over their products page, they are marketing this product for the Japanese consumer with prices less than $30.
KaitePAD is the new and improved version of their second generation Kaite2S, which they are phasing out. The KaitePAD comes in four different colors and in two sizes (A4 and B5) and comes with a pen and large-ish “dry eraser”.
The Kaite tech is quite interesting. The paper has micro magnetized magnets. One side of the particle is white; the other side is black. Using magnets on the tip of the pen, it will turn black as you move the pen across the paper. The black stays that way permanently – unless you use the reverse magnet on the eraser of the pen or the dry eraser that comes with the Kaite. You can rub on it, the writing won’t change. It looks like magic, to be honest!
I write and I draw a lot, and this would be a great, fun canvas for me to play around with. If I like a drawing, I can use their Kaite app to snap the image and save it. There is also a transcription service that might cost money if you want their app to transcribe your chicken scratch.
From my understanding, there are no shading, because the ink capsule only has two colors. I don’t have the product, but that just makes sense. The other problem if you forgot to take a photo and accidentally erase it, that can be annoying. The last problem I can see is if you damage your pen or eraser, there’s literally no way for you to write or erase without having to buy another accessory.
Still, despite the drawbacks, I’m very interested in getting my hands on this product. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s currently not available in the USA. A third-party seller on Amazon was selling the old model for $70, which is too much of a mark-up for me to take a chance on. You have to assuming they are marking 100% up on the product (they probably only paid $35 for it).
