It’s the most expensive Kindle ever! As someone who has kept up with e-Ink and their pricing, this $680 (64GB model) for the new Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft should not surprise you. In fact, this Colorsoft seems to be targeting the ReMarkable Paper Pro’s fanbase, as it is a similar size and pricing.
The Remarkable company came out with the Remarkable Paper Move (RPM), which is a mini-RPP. The new device is 7.3 inches and can fit in your pocket. It has everything the RPP offers (including the Gallery 3 Color e-ink screen), but only smaller and portable. This very expensive pocket notepad is $500, comes bundled with a pen.
The next generation of e-ink is here, and it is called Spectra 6.
The original Spectra had only three pigments (red, black, white), but over the years, they evolved to Spectra 6, featuring six colors: red, yellow, blue, white, black, and green… and through those combinations can produce about 60,000 colors.
As I previously mentioned, I am temporarily living in Jacksonville for the next few months....
The reviews for the Kindle Colorsoft are in, and it’s not good. As you know, I was considering buying it before it was released, but now reading all the negative reviews, I’m definitely avoiding it.
It’s funny how none of the reviews that got free review units points out or were critical of the Colorsoft’s flaws. Can you really trust all those YouTubers or review websites? It takes getting the units in the hands of regular consumers will you see a true review of the product.
As you may have heard, Amazon is releasing its first color Kindle called the Kindle Colorsoft on October 30, 2024.
The device is a 7-inch tablet that use Kaleido 3 does not appear to be competing with Remarkable Paper Pro, but rather Kobo, who makes a color 7” called the Kobo Libra Colour. The Kobo Colour out in April 2024 and have been slowly converting Kindle readers to Kobo readers.
Further proof, the Kindle Scribe was Amazon’s as an answer to Kobo’s Kobo Elipsa, which is a 10” device for notetaking (but also the ability to read Kobo books).
When I first saw the Remarkable Paper Pro online in early September 2024, I dismissed this because of how expensive it was. It’s about $600, and part of that price includes the required pen. Plus, I was massively disappointed in Boox Note Air 3 C due to the poor color representation of Kaleido 3.
After watching some comic book pages on the RPP, I was definitely interested buying this as my digital comic book reader! Unfortunately, as an e-reader, it absolutely sucks. The Remarkable only supports PDF and ePub, with no support for Kindle Books or CBR (the popular comic book archive format).
If you want to read your digital Amazon books on the Remarkable Paper Pro, you are going to have to jump through some hoops, due to the Amazon’s DRM (Digital Rights Management).
Longtime readers will remember that I’m on an impossible search for the perfect color e-Ink reader, mostly for reading comic books and magazines. So what I’m looking for is a large (larger than 12 inches) device to display color e-Ink.
As noted in my review of Boox Note Air 3c (10 inches), I was not impressed with the muted/faded colors. That’s because the color technology, called Kaleido 3, is limited to 4,000 colors and sits on top of the black and white layer. The result is a much darker image. You don’t get true black and white or do you get true colors, it just looks awful, in my opinion.
I’ve been looking for the perfect e-Ink tablet for a while, I thought my prayers were answered with the Boox Note Air 3, but I was disappointed in the muted/muddy colors. It’s not a good Black & White e-reader either because due to the nature of Kaleido 3, it cannot achieve true white. Their version of white is really grey.
While black and white e-Ink have been around since 2007 under a variety of names (Vizplex, Pearl, Carta), color e-Ink technology is relatively new, as you can see from the Color eInk time line that I’ve compiled for you. Color eInk was only available for the consumer market in 2021, so it’s a very young technology.
As I previously mentioned, I bought the BOOX Note Air 3 C, the color eInk tablet, primarily for reading comic books. Even though the tablet was recently released in October, 2023, none of the reviewers actually touch on reading comics or magazines.
For comic book readers, you’re going to have to use the Kindle App. Several years ago, Amazon bought out their comic competition, ComiXology, and slowly dismantled the company and took their guided-view technology.
I just bought the BOOX Note Air 3 C, the color eInk tablet for reading comics. The eReader arrived today, so I’m playing around with it and my first impression is that I made a terrible mistake.
Just a reminder that we’re in the middle of the Epic Games 12 Days of Christmas Game Giveaway for 2023! The event officially kicked off December 20th, and the latest game is Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition.
