Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft – It’s the most expensive Kindle ever!
It’s the most expensive Kindle ever! As someone who has kept up with e-Ink and their pricing, this $680 (64GB model) for the new Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft should not surprise you. In fact, this Colorsoft seems to be targeting the ReMarkable Paper Pro’s fanbase, as it is a similar size and pricing.

There is a cheaper color model at 32GB storage is slightly cheaper at $630… but personally speaking, I would spend a little more to get double the storage. This is incredible useful if you own a ton of Omnibus or Epic Collection (these runs 3GB per comic).
As I have previously stated, I need the e-ink display in color and larger than 11 inches so I can comfortably read my digital comic books. I have the original black & white Scribe, and I find that too small (10 inches) – same can be said for the 10 inch Boox – see image comparison.
If you look at what is available in the 11-inch or larger Color e-Ink, you’ll notice that there are very few. And you’ll also notice the astronomical prices. The 13-inch Boox X costs over $800. At that price, you might as well get an iPad Pro, because the iPad will be faster and can do more.
Of the three, I have the Remarkable Paper Pro. I can’t afford the Boox X, and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft have not been released yet. I currently only own the Remarkable Paper Pro, the original Kindle Scribe, and the 10” Boox Air C, so I can give you insights on how they all work.
Both the Colorsoft and Boox uses Kaleido 3, which is a color film that goes over a black & white e-ink particle. This tech looks good, even at 4,000 colors, but it suffers from being too dark. So, you need a front light to make it readable (at least to my eyes). The RPP uses Gallery 3, which offers 50,000 colors, but I feel that the RPP stripped out some colors, or something, because, as far as colors are concerned, both color technology looks almost the same. There are some major differences, of course, like the color yellow looks bright and true on the Remarkable, but looks terrible on the Kaleido 3 devices.
When it comes to document types and support, and overall user experience goes, the Remarkable SUCKS. It is limited to three formats: PDF, ePub, or Word Documents. That’s it. Plus, it is running a modified Linux O/S, so you can’t just plug it into your PC and drag and drop files, it is a closed system. How you can get documents on it: you have to sync it using their application. The syncing sucks too, because after a time period, it just won’t sync. That is, until you pay their $30 a year connect service.
The Kindle uses their own O/S, I believe based on Android. It’s still restricted, but at least you have the Kindle Store… which 99% of where all e-Books are bought and sold. Since it’s Android, it supports all sorts of formats, including the popular CBR or Zip files that you can just drag and drop to read your comics.
The Boox uses Android, so whatever Android offers, it is yours. You can do emails, you can surf the web, you can download other book stores, like Kobo, etc. Boox has its own built-in book reader, which is actually very good. But you don’t have to use it, you can download your own reader if you prefer a different app. If you can afford that $820 price tag, I say go for it… or just get a good iPad Pro.
The question is: Will I buy a Scribe Colorsoft? Probably not right now, at that price. Usually with these Amazon products, you want to wait for a sale. The Kindles usually goes on sale during Prime Day… and for sure when a newer Kindle Colorsoft is introduced. So, the smart money is just to wait it out. If I can get the Colorsoft at below $500, I would buy it.
