The dog days of summer aren’t here quite yet, but we’re previewing some of the best one day or weekend free music events in the Twin Cities for summer 2026.
Mid May in Minnesota finally has things warming up, snow removal equipment put away, and gardening and other summer gear coming out. And with that also comes a lot of free music events across the Twin Cities. Like last year, the opening disclaimer here is that this is nowhere near exhaustive and also largely focuses on Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Unlike last year, here in 2026, we will split this into two separate previews. This one will focus on one day or weekend events and part two will hit the music series. Let’s dig in…
Art-A-Whirl
Going on this very weekend, Art-A-Whirl is a very busy and wildly diverse, long-running annual event in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s also extremely decentralized, with each participating building leading their own efforts. You can find a map of all the places involved at the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association’s website, but you will likely have better luck with other groups who have consolidated the music schedules. There’s too much to even go into, but this one is fun. You can read our very small sample from last year’s event.

Grand Old Day
Having returned in 2025 after some lost years, 2026 looks to be another good year. Happening Sunday, June 7th from 8am-6pm, they pack a lot in on six stages along Grand Avenue in Saint Paul. With Gully Boys, Thomas Stitcha, Haley E. Rydell, and many others, there will be something that works for you. Dave hit part of last year’s festivities.

Twin Cities Jazz Fest
Organized by the non-profit of the same name, this will be from Thursday, June 18 through Saturday, June 20, mostly in the afternoon and evening. We like this one and have reviewed before, most recently last year. There are venues across multiple cities, from Berlin in Minneapolis to Crooner’s in Fridley. But the heart of it takes place in downtown Saint Paul, centered at Mears Park. Note that an occasional venue may have cover chargers, but all the stages in downtown are free. See the full list of performing artists here.
The Twin Cities Jazz Fest is celebrating their 28th Anniversary this June 19-20, 2026. The non-profit organization with the mission of bringing communities together to enjoy and appreciate the art form of jazz and inspire new generations of youth. The festival is located in and around Mears Park in the Lowertown neighborhood of downtown Saint Paul. There are two outdoor stages at Mears Park as well as over 18 St. Paul venues have jazz programmed throughout the weekend. The Jazz Fest is a walking event. Most of the stages and venues are within walking distance.
Stone Arch Bridge Festival
A bit of overlap with Jazz Fest, this is happening Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21, this is yet another annual event (the 32nd!) of note. This takes place in downtown Minneapolis around (you guessed it) the Stone Arch Bridge. The Japhies are closing out one of the two stages on Saturday (6pm), while Dan Israel and The Envies are notable Sunday performers. See the full list of musicians here.
