Festivals

Jax: November 6 to November 9, 2025

Here are some shows, taking place in Jacksonville and nearby cities, from November 6 to November 9, 2025: • Balu Brigada at FIVE (Nov 6, 2025) • Stephen Wilson Jr. at Florida Theatre (Nov 8, 2025) • Lovesong at Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair (Nov 9, 2025)

Creeping Charlie at Lake Harriet Bandshell (August 29, 2025)

There was a subdued atmosphere at Lake Harriet on Friday night as most people had either left for their cabins for the long holiday weekend or took advantage of another great day of weather by surrounding themselves with two hundred thousand neighbors at the Minnesota State Fair. At least that’s how it felt as a cool breeze came off the lake and The Commodore’s “Easy” played through the main speakers.

Mpls: September 24 to September 25, 2025

Minneapolis: September 24 to September 25, 2025:

Leonid & Friends at Fitzgerald Theater (Sep 24)
Radio Free Alice at 7th St Entry (Sep 24)
Deltron 3030 at Uptown Theater (Sep 24)
Makaya McCraven at Icehouse (Sep 25)

The Coronas at Ceol on the River, Harriet Island (August 7, 2025)

The Irish Fair of Minnesota is one of the largest annual festivals of its type in the country, with a full three days of events. Taking over Harriet Island in downtown St. Paul, the Irish Fair will have half a dozen stages for music and dance events, and tents and space for plenty of food, drink, crafts, and sports. And with all of that, this year they are expanding with a Thursday night event, Ceol on the River (ceol being the Irish word for music). Three bands, headlined by alternative rock band The Coronas kicked off the first ever event.

Yam Haus at Lake Harriet Bandshell, Minneapolis (August 1, 2025)

Except for the lingering Canadian smoke it was a perfect night to be outside to catch The Star Tribune’s Music & Movies at Lake Harriet’s Bandshell. It was definitely a family affair with the movie being Denzel Washington’s Remember the Titans and local favorite Yam Haus playing a 75-minute set before the hazy sun set.

Minnesota Yacht Club, Harriet Island (July 20, 2025)

The final day of the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, at Harriet Island, in St Paul, was looking to be nearly perfect weather and was certainly the heaviest attended crowd of the festival early in the day.

Minnesota Yacht Club, Harriet Island (July 19, 2025)

With no real rain in the forecast for Day 2 of the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, things were looking clear for the full slate of bands. Organizers and Festival staff kept things moving smoothly, which was impressive given the large number of people in the relatively small Harriet Island Regional Park.

Minneapolis This Week (July 20, 2025)

The Beatnik Brothers at Veteran’s Memorial Amphitheater, Minneapolis (July 2, 2025)

The music of the 80’s was not on tap when The Beatnik Brothers took the stage at Veterans’ Memorial Amphitheater, but for two hours the outdoor venue was filled with hit songs starting with “Little Sister” from Elvis Pressley. Pretty quickly the front of the stage filled with dancers, young and old, but mostly older due to the songs as well as a retirement community abutting the park.

Taste of Minnesota Summer

Summer in Minneapolis translates to free outdoor shows. We’ve already touched on a few Summer Music Series: Stone Arch Bridge Festival, Twin Cities Jazz Fest, Music in the Parks, Como Lakeside Pavillion Summer Concert Series, Lowertown Sounds, and The Current’s Happy Hours… but here are a few more listed below. Enjoy all the free music you can handle, before the snow fall!

Twin Cities Jazz Festival at Mears Park, St Paul (June 20-21, 2025)

On a balmy summer evening in downtown St. Paul the Twin Cities Jazz Festival kicked off its 27th year. Earlier in the week the Star and Tribune noted that the TCJF is bigger than the Taste of Minnesota and boasts more musical acts than the Minnesota Yacht Club. In fact, there were over eighty artists playing 20 venues over two days and a lot of it was free. So, it was my intention to catch five of these acts at Mears Park.

Kool and the Gang at Jacksonville Jazz Festival (May 23, 2025)

One of the biggest free Jazz festivals in the country, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, in Jacksonville, Florida, is currently underway this Memorial Day Weekend. Officially, the event kicked off on Thursday (May 22), with a Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition at The Florida Theatre. The winners got a cash reward, as well as the opportunity to play on Saturday (today) to an audience, estimated to reach about twenty-five thousand attendees (keep in mind that the majority of people will show up much later in the day).

Best of the Fests: Mosswood Meltdown and Portola Music Festival

Get ready for those tasty East Bay summer vibes: For my tastes, nothing says Hella Oakland more than the annual Mosswood Meltdown. This year’s weekend music fest takes place July 19-20 at Mosswood Park, natch, and, per usual, features the inimitable filmmaker and indie tastemaker John Waters as your cheeky host. This year, many of the acts are making their only Bay Area appearance at the fest, including DEVO, Osees, The Exploding Hearts, Shannon & the Clams. Also appearing are ‘90s riot grrrl band Bratmobile and Kreayshawn, who’s doing her first show in over a decade. You might be baking under that East Bay sun, but you’ll for sure be doing it in style.
