It’s always a busy evening in the Hamline Midway neighborhood of St. Paul when there’s a Loons game (Major League Soccer). A stone’s throw from the soccer pitch, it was an evening of Mexican R&B at the Turf Club, with Girl Ultra in town on a headlining tour.
Continuing with our Road to Rocktober series, which will spotlight some upcoming October dates.

There was a subdued atmosphere at Lake Harriet on Friday night as most people had either left for their cabins for the long holiday weekend or took advantage of another great day of weather by surrounding themselves with two hundred thousand neighbors at the Minnesota State Fair. At least that’s how it felt as a cool breeze came off the lake and The Commodore’s “Easy” played through the main speakers.
When TypePad announced their closure a few days ago, we were scrambling to move our contents over to WordPress. To be fair, the plan was always to move to something modern, because we saw the writings on the wall with TypePad, when the platform stopped accepting new accounts during the pandemic (in 2020). When it seemed like this wasn’t a temporary thing, we started exploring alternative options, starting in early 2025.
Here is what is going on this week in Minneapolis/St Paul, ending on September 7, 2025.
• Glitterfox with Jillian Rae at 7th St Entry (Sep 2, 2025)
• PUP and Jeff Rosenstock at Palace Theatre (Sep 3, 2025)
• Saliva at Studio B (Sep 7, 2025)
The Northstar Original Revue hosted six local Twin Cities bands at the Midway Saloon.

In the last 24 hours I’ve been very busy for me. As you may, or may not, know, TypePad, the blogging platform that we’ve been on since 2007, is shutting down on September 30, 2025.
We have nearly 20 years of content, so moving each entry, one-by-one, is time consuming, and is not really an option. My only option is to quickly scrape the website and “save all” on my local hard drive and then eventually formatting it for the future blogging home.

Most casual listeners will only know Harry Chapin as the “Cat’s in the Cradle” musician, but the Grammy-winning and Hall of Fame inductee had written over 100 songs over 11 albums, until his death in 1981.
There’s no denying that “Cat’s in the Cradle” is Chapin’s signature song, and is relatable by anyone, who is too busy working to spend time with their family. Thanks to the hit single, Elektra Records was able to sell over 2.5 million copies of the 1974 album Verities and Balderdash.
All this was a little before my time, and I was gifted the album by my sixth-grade teacher, who was an avid fan. As the title suggests, this album contains important (vertities) and nonsense (balderdash) songs… in other words, a mishmash collection.
There are some gems on the record, including my personal favorite, “30,000 Pounds of Bananas”, which is much better when performed live.
The other song I liked is “I Wanna Learn a Love Song,” a song about Harry Chapin met his wife, Sandra. I didn’t know this at the time, and had always assumed that he got the idea from one of his passengers when he was a Taxi driver. That’s the case of “30,000 Pounds…”, which was a story he’s heard on a bus to Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Monday was Senior’s Day at the Minnesota State Fair, and there was no better band (Los Lobos) to play for this demographic than a group of guys that have been together for over fifty years. But that was later and there was still much to do.

The Minnesota State Fair is one the largest in the United States, and as mentioned in the preview, there’s a lot of music there, including nightly events at the Grandstand Stage. Local independent radio station The Current hosted Music on a Stick with a long evening of hip hop music, headlined by local Atmosphere.

A weekend trip to the mountains of Colorado turned into an impromptu music tour. After a lucky coincidence seeing David Devett at the Bucksnort Saloon in Sphinx Park, I had continued good fortune on the music front. A dinner at the Edwin Restaurant in Breckenridge turned into another unexpected and wonderful encounter with local music. Once again, I did not fully pay attention to the sound coming from the man playing a guitar as I got seated in an upscale restaurant in Breck. And, once again, as I got settled and was able to focus on the music, I realized that I was in the presence of a talented musician. Lucky me!
The Bucksnort Saloon in Sphinx Park, CO is an off-the-beaten-path legendary establishment up in the mountains off of 285 between Conifer and Bailey. Unless you were one of the 50?, 100? People who lived on Elk Creek Rd, you’d have no reason other than Bucksnort to take the ~6 miles from 285. The Bucksnort under new ownership as of 2018, couldn’t quite recover from the impact of COVID and without announcement, closed the saloon in 2022.
