Local Twin Cities legend Mark Mallman was celebrating the release of his newest album (his eleventh), Magic Time, at the Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis. Mallman is widely known in indie circles for his long body of work, but also the craziness of his live shows, which sometimes lean into full performance art. His Marathon shows, well over 24 hours each, are great examples of the lengths he is willing to go. The newest album, self-described as a “paranormal concept record” was the main topic du jour.
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week of August 11th-18th.
Minneapolis This Week (August 17, 2025)
The Irish Fair of Minnesota is one of the largest annual festivals of its type in the country, with a full three days of events. Taking over Harriet Island in downtown St. Paul, the Irish Fair will have half a dozen stages for music and dance events, and tents and space for plenty of food, drink, crafts, and sports. And with all of that, this year they are expanding with a Thursday night event, Ceol on the River (ceol being the Irish word for music). Three bands, headlined by alternative rock band The Coronas kicked off the first ever event.
Fifteen years in, Broncho is a compelling live act, bending time, memory, and pop-rock structures until you’re not sure what you’re hearing, only that it feels familiar. At a sold-out show Thursday night at the 7th Street Entry, they turned their new album into the foundation for a two-hour immersive experience.

I’m not sure if it’s a first for We Heart Music, but last night welcomed the return of a band Horsegirl and its opening act that played at the same venue two years before. Also the drummer in the opening act is the younger brother to one of the headliners. So, a lot of synergy, maybe a perfect trifecta if you could gamble on music.

Make that just shy of two, as Jacksonville, FL hard rock band Shinedown last visited the T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City in September 2023, but they’re back- bigger and better- and armed with several new singles, ahead of a brand-new album, expected out in March 2026.

Except for the lingering Canadian smoke it was a perfect night to be outside to catch The Star Tribune’s Music & Movies at Lake Harriet’s Bandshell. It was definitely a family affair with the movie being Denzel Washington’s Remember the Titans and local favorite Yam Haus playing a 75-minute set before the hazy sun set.

The end of July was upon us and there were a lot of live music options across the Twin Cities. But it was also a Thursday, meaning there would be local acts performing at Turf Club, and this last day of the month was headlined by The Holy North.

On a seasonably, sunny day in July, Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis was beaming with energy and excitement for the Grand Piano Spectacular. The pre-show music of the night was provided by Peter Kogan’s TarBone Quintet. The group played a grooving jazz set with each musician showcasing their improvisation abilities. If jazz wasn’t your vibe, many local vendors and artisans had kiosks with their wares and hand-crafted goods for sale inside the atrium.
